語源

ラテン語の iudex (裁判官、審判員、属格形 iudicis などから iudic- の形) に由来する。古フランス語の juge を経て英語に入った。
iudex は、ius (法、権利、iu- の形) + dicere (言う、宣言する) に分解できると考えられている。

元々は「法を言う（宣言する）人」という意味であった。
「裁判官、判事」や、競技などの「審判員、審査員」を指す。動詞としては、物事や人を「判断する、判定する」、罪を「裁く」といった意味で使われる。
