語源

動詞 understand (理解する) の動名詞または名詞形である。
understand は古英語の understandan (理解する、把握する) に由来する。一般的には under- (古英語では「間に、中に、下に」などの意味) + standan (立つ) と分解されるが、文字通りの「下に立つ」という意味からどのように「理解する」という意味になったかは諸説ある。「（物事の）間に立つ」「本質の中に立つ」「下に立って支える」といった比喩的な意味合いから発展したと考えられている。

「理解すること」が基本的な意味である。
物事の意味や本質を把握すること「理解、理解力」、相互の「合意、協定」、他者への「思いやり、共感」などを意味する。
