語源

動詞 stand (立つ) + 名詞を作る接尾辞 -ing から成る。

stand はゲルマン祖語の standaną に由来し、さらにインド・ヨーロッパ祖語の語根 sta- (立つ、置く) に遡る。非常に基本的な動詞である。

「立っている状態」から転じて、社会的な「地位」や「評判」、あるいは「継続している状態」などを意味するようになった。
