語源

古英語の動詞 standan 「立つ、存在する」および名詞 stand 「停止、場所」が由来である（ラテン語 stare, ドイツ語 stehen と同根）。

足で体を支えて「立つ」、困難などに「耐える（我慢する）」、あるいはある問題に対する「立場」「見解」など、多くの意味を持つ。
