語源

ラテン語の constructio (組み立てること、構造、文法構造) が由来である。
これは動詞 construere (共に積み上げる、建てる、構成する) の過去分詞 constructus + -io (行為・状態)。
construere は con- (共に) + struere (積む、建てる、配列する)。

「（材料などを）共に積み上げて作ること」が原義。建物などを「建設」「建造」すること、またはその「建築物」自体、文や理論などの「構造」、あるいは言葉や出来事の「解釈」を意味する。structure (構造) や instruct (教える - 中に積み上げる) と関連がある。
