語源

ラテン語の substantia (存在、本質、実体、財産、物質) に由来する。これは動詞 substare (下に存在する、しっかり立つ、耐える) の現在分詞 substans から派生した名詞である。
substare は sub- (下に) + stare (立つ、立っている) に分解できる。

「下に立って支えるもの、根底にあるもの」が原義である。
形を持つ具体的な「物質、物」や、外見に対して中身である「実質」、話などの「本質、要点」を意味する。哲学用語としての「実体」もこの語から来ている。
