語源

ラテン語の動詞 respicere が由来で、「振り返って見る、考慮する、尊敬する」という意味を持つ。
これは re- 「再び、後ろへ」と specere 「見る、観察する」から成る。

相手の価値を認めて「振り返って見る」ように、「尊敬する」「尊重する」ことを意味する動詞。名詞としては「尊敬」「敬意」、あるいは「点」「箇所」（in this respect この点において）。
