語源

名詞 difficulty (ディフィカルティ、「困難さ」) から逆成されたか、あるいはラテン語の difficilis (ディッフィキリス、「難しい」) に由来する古フランス語 dificile を経ている。
difficilis は dis- (否定、困難) + facilis (ファキリス、「容易な」、facere「行う」から) に分解できる。

「容易でない」ことが原義で、「行うのが難しい」「理解するのが困難な」といった意味を持つ。
