語源

後期ラテン語の contrata (terra) 「向かい側の（土地）、地方」が由来である。
これはラテン語 contra 「〜に対して、反対して」から派生している。

元々は都市に対して「向かい側にある」土地、すなわち「地方」「田舎」を意味したが、一つの政治的単位としての「国」全体を指すようにもなった。
