語源

ラテン語 respondere (応答する、返答する) の過去分詞 responsum から派生したラテン語 responsabilis (応答できる) に由来する可能性があるが、直接的には動詞 respond + 接尾辞 -ible と考えられることが多い。
respondere は re- (返して、応えて) + spondere (厳粛に約束する、保証する) から成る。

元々は「（問いかけなどに）応答できる」という意味合いから、「（義務や要求に）応えることができる」、つまり「責任がある」という意味になった。また、「信頼できる、頼りになる」という意味も持つ。
