語源

ラテン語の excellentia が由来で、「優越、卓越」を意味する。
これは「秀でる、抜きん出る」を意味する動詞 excellere （ex- 「外へ」 + cellere 「そびえる」）から派生している。

他よりも「外へそびえ出ている」状態、つまり「優秀さ」や「卓越性」を表す。
