語源

ラテン語の apparere (現れる、明らかになる) が由来である。
これは ap- (ad-「〜へ、〜の前に」が p の前で変化) + parere (現れる、見える) に分解できる。

「（視界の）前に現れる」ことが原義で、「姿を現す」や、外見から判断して「〜のように見える」という意味で使われる。apparent (明白な、見たところの) と同語源。
