語源

ラテン語の acidus (酸っぱい、鋭い) が由来である。
動詞 acere (酸っぱい、鋭い) + -idus (性質を持つ)。

元々は味が「酸っぱい」ことを意味した。化学では、水に溶けて水素イオンを生じる物質「酸」や「酸性の」状態を指す。比喩的に、批判や言葉遣いが「辛辣な」「とげとげしい」様子も表す。acute (鋭い) や acrid (刺激性の) と関連がある。
