語源

接頭辞 under- (下に、下位の) と名詞 ground (地面、土地) を組み合わせた複合語である。

文字通り「地面 (ground) の下 (under)」にある状態や場所を指す（例：地下鉄 underground railway）。

そこから転じて、「公になっていない」「秘密の」活動や組織（例：レジスタンス運動など）を指すようになった。さらに「非合法の」という意味合いで使われることもある。
