語源

ラテン語の immunitas が由来で、「（義務や負担からの）免除」を意味する。
これは immunis 「義務を免れた、自由な」（in- 否定 + munis 「奉仕、義務」に関連）から派生している。

元々は税金や兵役などの「免除」を意味したが、後に病気（特に感染症）に対する抵抗力、すなわち「免疫」を指すようになった。
