語源

ラテン語の congregare (群れとして集める) が由来である。
これは con- (共に) + grex, gregis (群れ、ラテン語) + -ation (こと、集まり)。

文字通り「群れ (grex) として共に (con-) 集まること」を意味し、特に宗教的な目的で集まった人々の「集会」や、その集まった「会衆」自体を指すことが多い。
