語源

古英語の prēost から、俗ラテン語の presbyter を経て、ラテン語の presbyter、さらにギリシャ語の presbyteros (年長者、長老) に由来する。これは presbys (古い、年長の) の比較級である。

元々は共同体や教会の「年長者」「長老」を指したが、キリスト教などで儀式を執り行う権限を持つ「聖職者」、特にカトリックや英国国教会などの「司祭」を指すようになった。
