語源

ラテン語の circumferentia が由来である。
これは動詞 circumferre (周りに運ぶ) の現在分詞 circumferens + -ia (名詞語尾)。
circumferre は circum- (周りを) + ferre (運ぶ、持つ、耐える) に分解できる。

「周りを運ぶ（線）」が原義で、円や球などの「周りの長さ」、「円周」を意味する。transfer (移す) や ferry (渡し船) と関連がある。
