語源

形容詞・名詞。ラテン語の capitalis (頭の、主要な、生命に関わる) が由来である。
caput (頭) (属格 capitis) + -alis (〜の)。

「頭（かしら）」に関する、が原義。「頭」は最も重要な部分であることから、国の「主要な」都市＝「首都」、事業の元手となる「主要な」資金＝「資本（金）」を意味するようになった。文字の「頭文字」である「大文字」や、死刑に相当する「生命に関わる」（例: capital punishment 死刑）という意味もある。chapter と関連がある。
