語源

動詞 detect (ディテクト、「発見する、見つけ出す」) に、行為者や関連するものを示す接尾辞 -ive を付けた言葉である。

detect はラテン語の detegere (覆いを取る、発見する) に由来する。「（犯罪などを）発見する人」という意味で、特に犯罪捜査を行う「探偵」や「刑事」を指す。
