語源

ラテン語の accidens (偶然起こること、出来事) が由来である。これは動詞 accidere (〜に降りかかる、起こる) の現在分詞形。
ac- (ad-「〜に、〜に対して」が c の前で変化) + cadere (落ちる、倒れる、起こる) に分解できる。

「〜の上に予期せず落ちてくること」というイメージから、「偶然の出来事」や、特に不幸な出来事である「事故」を指すようになった。incident (出来事) と関連がある。
