語源

動詞・名詞。ラテン語の notitia (知っていること、知識、面識、評判、通知) が古フランス語を経て入ったもの。
これは形容詞 notus (知られた、有名な)、動詞 noscere (知る、認識する) の過去分詞形に関連する。

「知っていること」が原義。何かを見たり聞いたりしてその存在や変化に「気づく」「認める」という意味の動詞。名詞としては、公式な「通知」「告知」や、壁などに貼られた「掲示」、あるいは「注目」「注意」。note (メモ、注目する) や know (知る) と関連がある。
