語源

中世ラテン語の identificare が由来である。
identitas (同一性 < ラテン語 idem 同じ) の語幹 identi- + -ficare (〜にする < facere 作る)。

「同じものにする」が原義。人や物が誰・何であるかを「特定する」「確認する」、あるいは自分自身を他人や他のものと「同一視する」「共感する」 (identify with ~) という意味で使われる。
