語源

形容詞・名詞。後期ラテン語の contemporarius が由来。
con- (共に) + temporarius (一時的な、その時の < tempus 時 (属格は temporis))。

「（〜と）同じ時代に属する」が原義。歴史上の人物や出来事が「同時代の」、あるいは「現代の」という意味の形容詞。名詞としては「同時代の人」や「同年輩の人」を指す。temporary (一時的な) と関連がある。
