語源

ラテン語の constitutio (制定、法令、構成、体質) が由来 (→ constitute 参照)。
constitut(us) + -io (行為・状態)。

「共に立てられたもの」が原義。国家の基本構造や統治原理を定めた最高法規である「憲法」、物事の基本的な「構成」や「組織」、人の身体的な「体質」や「体格」などを意味する。
