語源

ラテン語の fundamentum 「基礎、土台」（fundare 「基礎を築く」 ← fundus 「底、土地」）から派生した中世ラテン語 fundamentalis が由来である。

建物などの「基礎」となる部分のように、物事の最も重要で「根本的な」「基本的な」部分を指す。
