語源

ラテン語の caritas (属格 caritatis) が由来で、「愛、親愛、高価」を意味する。
これは carus 「親愛な、高価な」から派生している。

キリスト教的な「愛」（隣人愛）から、困っている人への「慈悲」の心や、それに基づく「慈善」行為、あるいは「慈善団体」を指すようになった。
