語源

ギリシャ語の atmos (蒸気、息、空気) + sphaira (球、ボール)。

元々は「空気（蒸気）の球」という意味で、地球を取り巻く気体の層である「大気」を指す。転じて、特定の場所や状況が持つ独特の「雰囲気」や「気分」をも意味するようになった。sphere (球) と関連がある。
