語源

イタリア語の all'arme! (武器へ！、武装せよ！) という警告の叫びが、古フランス語の alarme を経て英語に入った。
all'arme は alle arme の短縮形で、これはラテン語の ad illa arma (それらの武器へ) に由来する (arma は「武器」)。

元々は敵襲などを知らせる緊急の「警報」や「叫び」であったが、転じて突然の危険に対する「驚き」や「不安」、そして動詞として「警告する」「不安にさせる」という意味で使われるようになった。
