語源

ラテン語の suspiciosus が由来で、「疑い深い」という意味を持つ。
これは動詞 suspicere 「下から見上げる、疑う、怪しむ」（sub- 「下に」 + specere 「見る」）から派生した suspicio 「疑い」に関連する。

「下から窺う」ようなイメージから、他者を「疑い深い」態度や、状況や人などが「怪しい」「疑わしい」様子を表す。
