語源

ラテン語の manu （manus 「手」の奪格）「手で」と、scriptus （scribere 「書く」の過去分詞）「書かれた」を組み合わせた言葉 manu scriptus が由来である。

元々は印刷術発明以前の「手で書かれた」文書、すなわち「写本」を指した。現在では、出版される前の著者による「原稿」（手書きでもタイプされたものでも）を指すことが多い。
