語源

ラテン語の動詞 recipere が由来で、「取り戻す、受け入れる、受け取る」という意味を持つ。
これは re- 「後ろへ、再び」と capere 「取る、掴む」から成る。

与えられたものや送られてきたものを「受け取る」、あるいは情報やもてなしなどを「受ける」ことを意味する。
