語源

ギリシャ語の epidermis が語源である。

これは epi- (上の、外の) + derma (皮膚) + (おそらく格語尾由来の) -is という要素から成り立っている。「真皮 (dermis) の上にあるもの」という意味で、皮膚の最も外側の層である「表皮」を指す。
