語源

動詞・名詞。ラテン語の attemptare (試みる、触れてみる、攻撃する) が古フランス語 atenter を経て入ったものである。
at- (ad-「〜へ、〜に対して」) + temptare (触れる、試す、誘惑する)。

「（〜に対して）触れて試してみる」が原義。成功するかどうかわからないが、何かをしようと「試みる」「企てる」こと、またはその「試み」「企て」自体を指す。tempt (誘惑する) と関連がある。
