ラテン語の fragilis (壊れやすい、もろい、はかない) に由来する。動詞 frangere (壊す、砕く、frag- の形) + 接尾辞 -ilis (〜しやすい、〜できる、英語の -ile)。

物理的に「壊れやすい、もろい」。健康状態などが「虚弱な」、状況などが「不安定で壊れやすい」ことも表す。
