語源

ギリシャ語の phantasia (φαντασία) が由来で、「現れること、想像、空想、幻影」を意味する。
これは動詞 phantazein 「見せる、現れさせる」（phainein 「現す、見せる」から派生）に関連する。

現実には存在しないことを「想像する」こと、「空想」「幻想」、あるいはそのような「空想的な物語」を指す。
