語源

中英語 surounden < 古フランス語 soronder (溢れる、水浸しにする) < 俗ラテン語 superundare < ラテン語 super- (上に、超えて) + undare (波打つ、溢れる) < unda (波)。

元々は水が「上から溢れる」という意味だったが、英語では意味が変化し、周囲をぐるりと「取り囲む」という意味で使われるようになった（おそらく round「円」との混同もあったとされる）。
