ギリシャ語の mēninx (膜、特に脳や脊髄を覆う膜) の複数形 mēninges が、そのまま医学用語として使われている。

単数形は meninx であるが、通常は複数形で、脳と脊髄を覆う3層の膜 (硬膜、くも膜、軟膜) 全体を指す。
