語源

descendant と同じく、ラテン語の動詞 descendere (下る、降りる) が語源である [de- (下に) + scandere (登る)]。

こちらは、接尾辞 -ent が付いて形容詞となった形である。「下っていく性質の」という意味から、「世襲の」（代々受け継がれていく）という意味でも使われる。名詞の descendant と区別して、形容詞の場合は descendent という綴りが使われることがあるが、descendant も形容詞として使われる。
